Windows XP Search Companion

In all search windows I have only the dog but nothing else ( no text, no
searching options ... nothing but a blue wide window with a happy dog in the
left corner)

Stefan,

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst\srchui.dll

Reinstalling the Search companion

1. Login as administrator
2. Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%\inf, and then click OK.
3. Locate the Srchasst.inf file.
4. Right-click the Srchasst.inf file, and then click Install.

This reinstalls the files that Search Companion uses. When you're prompted
for the system files, insert your Windows XP CD, or point to
Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder (if you've applied SP1 or SP2
separately) which-ever has the updated system files.

I did the reinstall routine and still get the error message, "Unexpected
Error, Action could not be completed". Now what??

I ended up using the remedy of adding the line,
"{e17d4fc0-5564-11d1-83f2-00a0c90dc849} in the registry. It works
beautifully now.

The 816665 article worked for me on 2 systems, but it's incomplete. It
neglects to mention what to do AFTER setting the value for the new key.
Simply exit regedit, and close all instances of Windows Explorer.

It also neglects to mention the CAUSE of the error. I'm not a programmer
and I haven't done any research, but based on my vague memory of when these 2
systems stopped searching, I believe it was because, after a successful
search, I deleted the Search Results Folder from the Folders pane of WinExpl.
