I friend would like to factory restore her ' several years old ' Dell
laptop. I'm not sure which version of XP it is , but it's certainly pre SP3

I kept the SP3 download and wondered if it can be applied straight after the
initial re installation ( to save some time..?)

TIA

Yes and it's recommended that you do just that. Then go for the post SP3
updates.

==
AND if you have a machine with an AMD chipset download the file...
removeIntelPPMonAMD.vbs ... from the Internet and run it before
running the SP3 update.

Otherwise you'll end up with the "black screen of death".
==

Never happened to me and I've install XP like that on dozens of AMD
computers.

==
The original SP3 that was issued screwed up AMD machines by the
thousands...hence the little vbs routine. I know because I was
involved in rectifying the problem on my own friggin machine.

Perhaps they have modified the SP3 to account for the problem.

I just re-installed XP last week and I followed my own advice before I
ran the SP3 update JUST TO MAKE SURE.

Only if you have one of the HP AMD computers that were
shipped, accidently, with the HP Intel Image. Dells were not
affected.

I have an HP with AMD Athlon set. I was informed that the newer AMD
chipsets were not affected.

XP has to be to at least SP1 before updating to SP3.

Other than that, and the HP-AMD warning mentioned in this thread, you
probably won't have any problems.
