I have lost this facility, and despite going back day by day over the
last couple of months it won't work.

I tried re-installing my copy of XP but system won't permit, saying the
one on board is newer version!

Can I safely delete that 'newer' version -which is the one originally
installed by manufacturer - and reinstall, then update my old one?

Meaning of "I have lost this facility"? When SP2 is installed XP becomes an
"upgraded" version - attempting to use an original XP CD without SP2 results
in the message about "a newer version is installed" - Two options -
uninstall SP2 or use XP CD with SP2 (you can consider "slip-streaming" your
XP with SP2 - check knowledge base for info)
