I have a computer that is instructing me to activate Windows xp, but when I
proceed the the activation dialog box, Windows informs me that Windows XP is
already actvivated.
How does one stop the the nag message or fix this problem?

Use a VL copy of XP, or switch to Linux. Anything else is merely a
work-a-round.

Possible solution:

Boot into "Safe Mode" by pressing F8 during the boot cycle.

Go to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 regwizc.dll , and hit enter.
Then go again to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 licdll.dll , and hit enter again.

Apparently, the above files became unregistered due to malware
or registry corruption.
