Windows XP Professional version 2002 Registration Problems

Hi to all who read this.
10 months ago i purchased my computer from a dealer who is no longer in
operation. This computer was built to my specifications and came with Windows
XP Professional version 2002. When i received my computer i also got a few
cds for things that I didnt really check on.
I have tried downloading the new security software for windows xp and it
will not accept because of the registration details are different. I think i
may have been duped and given and illegal copy which i am wanting to rectify.
My father in law has recently purchased a new computer and given me his copy
of Windows xp and his original registration code which i am now wanting to
put on my computer in place of this version. I am at my wits end on how to do
this. His orginal computer is a HP and had windows pre-loaded. I think his
version might be home edition. How do I go about changing this on my computer
or purchasing the code so that i may be elligble for these updates that are
available.
If you can help please contact me on (e-mail address removed).

kindest regards
Mandy
