Windows XP Professional - Installation Problem

I have a Intel Celeron 333 MHz Processor with 6 GB Harddisk (3GB + 3GB
partition) and 64MB of RAM.

Motherboard: Orginal Intel 440EX Board, TNT2 nVidia Graphics Card with 32MB
VRAM.

OS: Windows 98 SE - Installed in C:

When I tried to install Windows XP on D: (FAT32 Partition) through the
bootable setup CD, it loaded the required files to my computer and during
Scan Disk, I got the error message:

"Windows XP could not be installed because the drive D is corrupted beyond
repair".

I tried scandisk from Windows 98. It did not show any error and no bad
sectors were detected in my hard disk. What could be the problem? Could
anybody suggest a solution for this problem?

Regards,

PS: Drive D is already having 1 GB of data and has 2 GB off freespace for
Windows XP Installation.

buddy, id rather say u forget installing winXP on the
system. I also had the same problem and so i dropped it.

with regards
josh

Hi

Have a look at the following article - you may find that your PC is at the
very minimum specs:

"HOW TO: Prepare to Upgrade Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition to
Windows XP"

I think you hardware is just barely adequate. It is marginally at the
limiting area for barest minimal requirements. add to that that 2 3GB hard
drives are a joke. Windows itself takes up between ! - 1.5 GB depending on
how it is installed, and the paging file will take up a minimum of 2.5 times
your RAM. Microsoft claims minimum of 128 MG RAM, but recommends 256. Your
system just cant handle it. You should stick with Win98.

i dont know what's causing your problem, but XP runs just fine on my 300mhz
p2 laptop with 128meg memory and a 4 gig drive. could it run better? of
course, but its very acceptable so ignore all the doom and gloom others have
posted.

People from Digit Team installed Windows XP in a 486DX Processor with 66 MHz
speed. 32 MB RAM and 2 GB harddisk. what you guys say for this?
Kamesh, don't worry. we will install Windows XP in your system SOMEHOW!

Can any Tech Support person from Microsoft throw some positive light on this
issue?

Hi

An initial install of XP is at least 1.5 GB + hiberfil.sys(over 64MB) +
pagefile.sys(1.5x over 64MB). So you won't get much change of out 2GBs!!

If the problem is due to system configuration, SETUP must've been specific
that system does not meet minimum requirement.
But why there is an corrupted hard disk error on a error-free partition? And
I was not even trying to upgrade from Windows 98. I was just trying to
install Windows XP in a partition different from Windows 98. Is there any
way to supress Scandisk from running in Setup? I guess that will solve the
problem!

Hi

These are the minimum system requirements as quoted by MS:

"System Requirements for Windows XP Operating Systems"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314865&Product=winxp

You 'can' try and run XP on a lesser spec machine, but I don't know what
apps, 3rd party programs etc. would be able to run as well - or how they
would run.

Hi

I don't know of any way to stop the error checking in setup - unless it's
possible to do it via an unattended install.

hmmm... there used to be a switch to disable chkdsk during install of older
versions of NT, but I don't see one googling for XP winnt.exe or
winnt32.exe.

not only does he meet the minimum requirements, he actually meets the
RECOMMENDED requirements!! :)

a.. Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended)
a.. At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
a.. At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk
a.. CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
a.. Keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse or some other compatible pointing device
a.. Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution
a.. Sound card
a.. Speakers or headphones

look at "Install difficulties - XP Pro" posted
by "mwdcanuck" on jun 4 2004, i posted a reply there in
response to the same problem...should solve ur problems
too

Rob...

The OP stated that he only had 64MB of RAM, and your post clearly states
that 128MB RAM is recommended, so therefore his system only meets the
minimum requirements and not the Recommended requirements.

IMHO, this is a marginal to insufficient system for a Windows XP
installation --
and you may not be satisfied with its performance.

The errors that XP reports are real enough to prevent XP running REGARDLESS
of whether Win 98 scandisk claims everything to be ok.. low level format,
then partition and format the drive to get all errors erased.. if possible,
install a larger HDD.. at least 10gb or larger..

Also, REGARDLESS of what others claim to have done, XP will run like a dog
with only 64mb.. you will need at least 256mb RAM to make up for performance
deficiencies elsewhere..
