windows xp professional Event Viewer System Errors

L

Larry

I keep getting the following Warning errors added to event viewer every time
I restart the computer: Source: Rasman - remote access connection manager
failed to start because NDISWAN could not be opened.

Source: w3svc - The server was unable to add the Virtual Root '/recycler'
for the directory 'F:\recycler' due to the following error: The system cannot
find the path specified. (F drive is not connected to my laptop so why is it
looking for it?).

Source: w3svc - The server was unable to add the Virtual Root '/dotnetnuke'
for the directory 'c:\dotnetnuke\website' due to the following error: The
system cannot find the path specified. (I uninstalled dotnetnuke a long time
ago and can find no references to it on my laptop).

Source w3svc - The server was unable to add the Virtual Root '/Favorites'
for the directory 'F:\20070210bulawrence\favorites' due to the following
error: The system cannot find the path specified. (This was a backup I did
back in 2007!).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check the registry with regedit.exe. Where exactly do these strings occur?

Same way as in Word, Excel and many other programs: You click Edit, then
Find, then type the string you're looking for, e.g. c:\dotnetnuke\website.

I figured that out about 45 minutes ago. So, I kept deleting all the
references to for example "dotnetnuke". However, when I restart my computer
and check event viewer, the errors are still there. I am deleting whats on
the right window (Name/type/data). What am I missing? There are other entries
in the right window and I am afraid to delete them because I don't know if I
need them or not. Thanks for helping.

Let's have a look at the data behind this key:
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC. To get around the typing
effort, use File / Export, then copy & paste the contents of the export file
into your reply.

See below - why are there so many occurrences and how do I remove them
permanantly? I did try a few times with right-click and delete which appeared
to remove the entries (only to return again).

Fine. I would now do this:
1. Create a System Restore Point.
2. Delete the key HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC\Parameters\Virtual
Roots. Make sure to delete it from the *CurrentControlSet*, not from the
many others you reported in your reply.
3. Reboot the machine.
4. Check the event viewer. Do you still get these error messages?

There is no hklm key associated with this. Did you mean for me to delete the
following?

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC\Parameters\Virtual Roots]

If yes - then what physical folder or file should I delete? Thanks again!

I recommended that you delete the key
HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC\Parameters\Virtual Roots
This is exactly the same as
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\W3SVC\Parameters\Virtual
Roots
except for the standard abbreviation
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM=HKLM

To delete the key, click it with your mouse then press the Delete key on
your keyboard. There is no file or folder to delete! Note also that the keys
are on the left half of the screen and the values are on the right half. You
must delete the key, not the values.

I am still not clear what to delete. I can't delete hkey_local_machine and
can't delete System. I need to know explicitely what to delete. I know you
said the key, but I am still unclear. Once I have the path available and it
is pointing to dotnetnuke and others, then wahat am I to delete?
