Windows Xp Pro Upgrade Eligibility

I'm considering buying the XP Pro upgrade from a academic dealer. My old
college had a licensing agreement from MS that allowed me to get win 98SE for
free. My question is, will my Win 98SE CD (which is hard-coded with the mass
lisence product ID #) be recognized as upgradable?

Hi,

Many academic versions are not upgradeable, but there's no way to know for
sure. I would try it, and if it failed for that reason I would search out an
purchase a generic OEM version of Win98 as a qualifier.

As long as it is a 'proper' CD with a Win98 folder of .cab files, it
should in practice be accepted as evidence for upgrade on a clean
install. What the actual licensing position is is much more doubtful;
once you leave the college it should come to an end
