Windows XP Pro Problem

Concerning Windows XP Pro.
I have a problem that has compounded itself this last weekend.
- Automatic updates were turned on (stupid me)
- Windows wanted to install updates when I shutdown (installing updates

1 of ???)
- It never installed and I had to cold reboot.
- Then the system ran extremely slow with some programs becoming
processor hogs ( I think it was msmsgs.exe or something like that,
killing the process didn't help)
- Turned off the auto updates and could then reboot without the hang
up. I still had a system slowdown and couldn't do certain operations
like connect to the internet untill 30 minutes after reboot. I tried
to run windows updates manually from online, but it claimed I already
had the downloads and would run for hours trying to install just one of

them. I can't run simple operations like add/remove windows
componenets because it complains that the application is already
running.
- Finally I rebooted with the WIN XP Pro setup and did a windows
repair. The installation went ok, but nothing has changed. It still
runs slow and I can't connect to the internet from the PC.

Any suggestions? I really don't want to reformat and reinstall the
whole operating system as I have many Dev tools, projects, and
applications installed on the PC.

Please Help,

Thank you.
