Windows XP PRO locks up

Every time I attempt to go online with XP Pro, the screen and mouse freeze.
The only way out is a hard boot. No error message appears. I can surf for
maybe a minute before lockup. The hard drive is new. The computer is a Dell
Inspiron 8100 with 512 Mb Ram. XP is Version 2002. This lockup occurs with
a ethernet connection or a dial up. The computer will run all day with no
issues until an attempt to connect to the internet is made. I formatted the
system and reinstalled XP yesterday. The problem showed up again right
after. Any ideas?

As you have reformatted and reinstalled XP, it seems that XP is trying
to update your system with new security patches. There are about 40
patches (post SP2) to reinstall and these are all done automatically
unless you have changed the default settings.
