Windows XP Pro and Windows XP Home Networking

I have networked 2 machines (Windows XP Home & Windows XP
Pro) with an Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router w/ 4-port
switch (mo. BEFSR41) connected to Time-Warner Road-Runner
Cable Modem. I have tried DHCP Client and DHCP Server
modes on the router. I could access the Internet on both
machines while using DHCP enabled and also using static
ip's. However, I could not get File and Printer Sharing
working and could not communicate between machines. I
later discovered that I could not ping between machines
and on the XP Home pc, I could not ping that pc's own ip
address.

Question 1: Are there any settings on the pc's that
could be tweaked to allow these two machines to recognize
each other?

Question 2: Are any issues known on the Windows XP
network settings that could be causing the 2 machines to
not fully network?

Question 3: Have there been any known hardware
incompatabilities between Linksys router (BEFSR41) and
pc's w/ Windows XP Pro and/or Home?

Thanks for your assistance..

All of the problems you're seeing are probably caused by firewall
programs. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall -- it's for use only on a direct modem connection to the
Internet. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

Un-install all other firewalls (ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security,
etc) while troubleshooting. Don't re-install them until everything is
working, then configure them to allow access by computers on the local
area network.
