Is there a way to remove the "My Documents folder" (and its files and
subfolders) from the Windows XP explorer? (I would like to decide where I
want files to go)
My Documents is a logical reference point built in to the system - it is
provided separately for each user, pointing (by default) to the folder
in that user's Documents and Settings, so that references by programs go
to a distinct place for each person. But you can point it anywhere you
like; I have it as the root of my D: drive. Open a window on
C:\Documents and Settings\<you>\ and another to a point where you want
to have it; *right* drag it across and take *Move* here.
Or you can use TweakUI, My Computer - Special folder page to move just
the pointer to a folder that exists (thus avoiding having 'D:\My
Documents') and then move the contents separately
If you have multiple users, do it from each account separately, and keep
the spaces resulting still separate - eg D:\Jack and D:\Jill
Another thing that TweakUI can usefully do is to customise the items on
the left of the common Open/SAve dialogs, to give up to five references
pointed at any folders you like
TweakUI is one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe
Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP
