I am running windows XP home edition and have a problem
with long term performance. Long term meaning hours. The
longer the system is left on, the slower it gets. After
about 4-5 hours it is no longer responsive. In as little
as 3 hours, attempts to log onto MSN server DSL)is
unsuccesful (I believe it is timing out). Is there a
setting that I could have messed up? Any suggestions?

How Much memory and what speed is the machine. Has the
internet cache been cleaned lately? What programs are
running in the tray? as services?

Might be your processor overheating. Check the fan and/or
heatsink. Also check any other fans such as the power
supply fan and the muffing/cpu case fan.

If a heatsink is poorly attached to the processor, it
can't sufficiently transfer the heat generated by the
processor. This can happen straight from the company or,
as in my case, Dell used poor double sided tape which had
dry-rotted.
