windows xp media volume control

I recently upgraded from a e-machine to gateway(gt5014). On my old e-machine
I could play an audio cd with more volume than was ever necessary. With my
new pc with volume turned to max I do not have any hear the loudness of the
old pc. IHave configured speakers and downloaded driver from gateway, but no
change. I am using desktop speakers. (small). I have tried using larger
speakers from an old hp system but no change. Any suggestions? Thanks in
advance.
 
Volume turned to max where?
In cd player program?
Keyboard volume control?
Sound card volume control?
Volume control on main speaker?
