Windows XP Media Edition

Several months ago I bought an HP Media Center PC
(operating system is Windows XP Media Edition). The
system often becomes unstable. As an example sometimes
the icons on the main screen will all disappear and all I
can see is the background image. If I do a crtl-alt-del,
I can view the Task Manager and see what is actually up
and running.

Also, I am constantly getting the "windows has
encountered a problem" message. The systems works ok most
of the time but this instability is a nuisance.

Any ideas?
