a couple of days ago, my computer locked up and then shut
down by itself. When i restarted, it performed the system
memory check, dected HDD's and CD drives, detected which
drive to boot from, and booted from the hard drive. just
a split second after the Windows XP startup screen
appeared, the computer froze and I got a blue screen. It
said that windows was halted due to a missing or corrupted
master boot record. HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!

try bringing it up in safe mode pressing the F8 function
key while its booting, then go to command promt and type
in "fdisk /MBR" and return.

I tried to bring it up into safe mode with a command
prompt only, but it still gives the samme error

First of all you need to boot from your CD XP, than you
select "repair" than you select to repair with recovery
console, than you type in "administrator" than the
password, than you go on your CD drive and you go in to
i386 folder, and you type in "copy ntldr c:\" presuming
that your hard drive is c:, than you type in "fixmbr",
than you reboot you computer.
