I know this is probably more of a technical help group - but my qn is on
licencing.

I want to buy WinXp Pro and have seen a lot of offers on the internet for
very cheap XP Pro's and other software. Im talking about Win XP Pro for $60
and Office XP Pro for $70. I know that unbelievable deals are normally a
scam or a pirate operation, and was just wondering as it is so common to see
these deals if anyone knew anything about it.

I will protect myself on purchasing with a credit card. Are they illegal
discs that they send - or are they just being creative with the licencing
regulations.

The blurb on the site reads :-
---------------------------------------------------------------
WHY SO CHEAP

All the software is OEM - Meaning that you do not get the box and the manual
with it. You receive the software CD carrying a unique registration code.

All the software is in the English language for PC. Our offers are
unbeatable and we always update our prices to make sure we provide you with
the best possible offers. Hurry up and place your order, because our
supplies are limited. Currently, we also offer FREE SHIPPING!

No tech support is given by the manufacturer. Please refer to our Frequently
Asked Question's Section for more information. Note that we are not selling
any trial, incomplete or academic version of software - it is original and
fully functional.

PLEASE NOTE!
YOU'RE NOT BUYING ANY KIND OF SUBSCRIPTION. YOU'RE PURCHASING TANGIBLE GOODS
(SOFTWARE) THAT WILL BE DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR.
--------------------------------------------------------------------

Many are as you say a scam or pirated software.
The text you quote looks remarkably familiar - you seriously need to look at
the web site and where it is actually hosted, is the credit card entry
being done on a secure encrypted page or in clear text , is your data being
sent to a hostile state or for use by credit card fraudsters etc.

I know of one person who bough this software as a test - he had a few $$ to
throw away if it came to nothing. He received the software and it worked
fine - even came on a hologram disc and all. Though i am concerned that even
though the transaction may be secure and the goods will arrive - are they
likely tobe pirated software discs. $300 reduced to $70 seems a bit of a
steep reduction - but as i say, one person i know has received the software
ok.

Actually, if you were to clicked the links provided and then read
the site's self-contradictory,broken English "FAQ," you'd probably
have known it was a scam. Full OEM CDs that are full retail versions
that are legal as backup media? Shipped from eastern Europe? All CDs
shipped with the serial number included in a text file? Definitely
not legitimate CDs.

Those people who have reported back here after making purchases
from several of such web sites have indicated that what they actually
received was a copy of the widely-known-to-be-pirated Volume Licensed
version of WinXP Pro. They couldn't even install SP1 without being
informed that the had an invalid Product Key. And then there were the
mysterious charges that started appearing on some of their credit cards....
