Hello,
I have bought a new Asus motherboard M2N-E SLI and AMD Athlon 64X2 5200+ Dual-Core processor. I formatted one of my hard drives that I used in my old computer and tried to install Windows XP Home Edition. The installation seems to go ok but when the computer re-boots the first time and loads from the hard drive it stops with an error. " A problem has been detected windows shut down to prevent damage to your computer" Tech info stop 0X00000007B ( OXF789E63C,0X00000000,0X00000000

Does anyone have any idea whats causing Windows to stop?
I bought Vista and that installs ok on the same disk, however I would rather have XP at this time.
One possible cause could be that the disk is 200gb however only 127gb is showing even tho the disk was used with fdisk.

Thank you

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum but I am not sure if its a software or a hardware proble.

... even tho the disk was used with fdisk.
No, do not use FDISK for NTFS partitions ... the XP CD will do it all for you, correctly.

I cannot see why your MB cannot access more than 130Gb HD, mine can. ;)

Hi, Well I did try both and neither would work,When I used the XP CD it would install then re-boot just before it reached the windows startup then try and install by CD again, so it was a never ending circle.
I found out what the problem with the drive is, apparently its un allocated space on the disk, so I have around 60gig that I cant use at the moment as I don't know how to re-allocate it.
The main problem is installing Windows XP, there must be an explanation to why it won't install,I'm not exactly experienced in computers so do you think it might be the motherboard or processor?

Thanks

Boot from the XP CD ... Delete ALL partitions ... install using all the HD formating to NTFS

Hi, That didnt work, I let the XP CD clear and install like I have done many times on my old computer, then it crashed and ended up going around in a loop like I explained before. I went to PC world and bought a new Windows XP HE cd. I get the same result. So I have neither XP or Vista on my PC, I can install Vista again but will have lost all the settings I had before.
So I did as you asked booted from the XP CD and deleted all the partitions and installed using HD formatting to NTF

So, does it work ? ... Vista? loose all settings ? sorry, you have lost me ?

Hmmm, well the "error" you first mentioned is mainly a partition / hard drive problem.

Did you build this PC yourself ?

Does the BIOS "see" the HD correctly ? is it set to Auto detect HD ?

Is the Jumper on the HD set to master, and are you using an 80col ribbon cable ? They usually have a Black, Grey & Blue connector's ... Blue is connected to MB, Black is Master, the grey is used for a slave drive.

Hi, Yes and Vista installs ok, I did correct the problem with the drive partition ( unallocated space ) and have even tried a deferent drive anyway, My drives are IDE but I that shouldn't be a problem.
The jumper on the HD is set to master and the ribbon cable is the ASUS one that came with the motherboard. I will try another cable to see if that helps but like I said Vista installs ok.
I did notice in Vista that even tho I installed some Vista updated software like AVG Spyware sometimes the software wouldn't run because of an error " The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click OK to terminate the application.)

Yes I have built it myself, I really can't see what i have done wrong, if anything at all.

Thanks for your help

At this stage, Nor can I ... ;)

Computers, great inthey ... XP won't install, for some HD reason, yet Vista will, which, IMHO, would be better for that PC anyway.

As for AVG, sorry, not my cup of tea, you ain't the first to have that AVG Vista error, each to their own. ;)

Vista has a few new "tools" that are really good at finding solutions to most problems ... just takes a little time to get to know them. Vista has, IMO, been released a little too early and has caught a lot of peripheral manufacturers with their pants down. It will get better. I have had a few minor hiccups, but I like Vista. :D

I'm not sure what else I can suggest you try ... except as you say to try another ribbon cable ... I admit myself I just used my old original 80col ribbon cable & Asus's is still in the box ... a black cable innit ?

Stuck now, unless you can give me any more info on error mesages ... sorry. :o

Just out of interest, have you tried another HD?

The reason I say this is I recently upgraded a machine using one of 2 HD's previously used in a RAID0 array, both were working fine.
I couldn't get XP to load using one of them but the other was fine, and I have no idea why when they were both working fine before.

Secondly are you using the CD/DVD Rom seperately on the secondary IDE or as slave to the HD on the primary?

Hi, I have tried 2 HD's but no luck,I also tried the HD with XP installed from my old PC but it just kept rebooting.
Yes I have the CD and HD on separate cables and the CD is on the secondary IDE.

I wish I had never bothered upgrading now and just kept my old PC, one of the reasons I am not keen on Vista is because I bought a new graphics card Sapphire Radeon X1600 PCIE pro 256mb,I don't play games so it seems ideal for my needs, however thee problem is the catylist will only allow 1024x768 pixels and this makes the screen blurred and is playing hell with my eyesight. I wanted to go back to XP until they came up with a fix.

Anyway i will try a different cable and see if that works.

Thanks

Hi, I solved the problem! I bought new ribbon cables and XP installed without a problem.
I cant understand why I had no problems with Vista tho, anyway as long as its working now thats the main thing.

Thanks to everyone who helped me throughout this problem.
