Windows XP install and service pack 2

If I wipe my hard drive clean and then install Windows XP Pro is it necessary
to install service pack 1 before installing service pack 2?

Thanks.

Colin Barnhorst

No. SP2 is cumulative. No SP1 needed. Why do you feel you need to
reinstall Windows? It is usually better to solve the problem with the
present installation.

I don't foresee the need to reinstall Windows at the present time. This was
just a general FYI question that came up for me based on a technical article
I read.

Thanks for your quick response.

No, SP2 includes the SP 1 updates, but you will need to apply updates
released after SP2.

Hi,

Sorry. A weird question: trying to post but once I click the "New >

Sorry again but really need assistance and just cannot get in. Thanks!

Hello Colin,

I was advised that the question does not belong to here but if you would be
so kind to advise how to make the mobo to see my second HDD that would be
just great. The original question is below:

I built the system with two SATA HDD (CPU Intel 3,2; MB ASUS P5AD2).

While powering the system for the first time, BIOS showed only one HDD. I
was (and am) not sure whether it was OK but started installing Win MCE.

During installation the setup requested to insert SP1 CD. After that part
was completed it requested SP2 CD. After everything has been installed I
decided to download and install the Windows updates.

20 Win updates were downloaded and installed, which in my humble opinion is
too many for a system with SP2. But what is most surprisingly that when I
decided to check the Win Update one more time, it recommended me to download
and install &SP2. Why?

Finally I opened “My Computer†and there is only one HDD (C:) seen there.
The second SATA HDD is not seen.

Please advise what’s wrong and how to correct. What was done wrong? Thank you!

Swap the SATA cables and see what happens. Start with the hardware. Post
back with result. As for updates, there were between 8 and 12 just for
February, and I think there were five in either December or January, so 20
is right on target since SP2 came out in October. I will defer to another
respondent on the SP2 second download issue. That may involve a cache or
registry flag. I just don't know.

Colin,

Thank you so much!

I found that the connection was wrong - I connected both to two "Masters"
(red) connectors.

Now I tried 1 (red - Master) and 3 (black - slave) but the result is as
follows:
- Primary IDE Master: Plextor DVDR
- Third IDE slave: Samsung, That's it.

I will try to change them to 2 (red) and 4 (black). Not sure that it will
work because what is really confusing that DVDR is as Primary IDE Master.

Thank you

Finally I removed DVDR as Prime IDE Master and Prime Master is [not detected].

After that I tried various cable changes and got Third Master and Fourth
Master; Third Master and Third Slave but I can’t make it to detect a HDD as
Prime Master. What am I missing?

Thank you!

Finally I removed DVDR as Prime IDE Master and Prime Master is [not

After that I tried various cable changes and got Third Master and
Fourth
Master; Third Master and Third Slave but I can't make it to detect a
HDD
as
Prime Master. What am I missing?

Thank you!

Colin,

After all changes I've got Third IDE Master and Third IDE Slave but
Primary
IDE Master is still DVDR. Will such configuration it work?

Thank you.

You're welcome.

Colin,

Thank you so much!

I found that the connection was wrong - I connected both to two
"Masters"
(red) connectors.

Now I tried 1 (red - Master) and 3 (black - slave) but the result
is
as
follows:
- Primary IDE Master: Plextor DVDR
- Third IDE slave: Samsung, That's it.

I will try to change them to 2 (red) and 4 (black). Not sure that
it
will
work because what is really confusing that DVDR is as Primary IDE
Master.

Thank you

:

Swap the SATA cables and see what happens. Start with the
hardware.
Post
back with result. As for updates, there were between 8 and 12
just
for
February, and I think there were five in either December or
January,
so
20
is right on target since SP2 came out in October. I will defer
to
another
respondent on the SP2 second download issue. That may involve a
cache or
registry flag. I just don't know.

Hello Colin,

I was advised that the question does not belong to here but if
you
would
be
so kind to advise how to make the mobo to see my second HDD
that
would
be
just great. The original question is below:

I built the system with two SATA HDD (CPU Intel 3,2; MB ASUS
P5AD2).

While powering the system for the first time, BIOS showed only
one
HDD.
I
was (and am) not sure whether it was OK but started installing
Win
MCE.

During installation the setup requested to insert SP1 CD. After
that
part
was completed it requested SP2 CD. After everything has been
installed
I
decided to download and install the Windows updates.

20 Win updates were downloaded and installed, which in my
humble
opinion
is
too many for a system with SP2. But what is most surprisingly
that
when
I
decided to check the Win Update one more time, it recommended
me
to
download
and install &SP2. Why?

Finally I opened "My Computer" and there is only one HDD (C:)
seen
there.
The second SATA HDD is not seen.

Please advise what's wrong and how to correct. What was done
wrong?
Thank
you!

Well, you're here now. What is your question?

Hi,

Sorry. A weird question: trying to post but once I click the
"New >
Question" button, nothing happens. What's wrong?

Sorry again but really need assistance and just cannot get
in.
Thanks!

If I wipe my hard drive clean and then install Windows XP
Pro is
it
necessary to install service pack 1 before installing
service
pack
2?

Thanks.

No, SP2 includes the SP 1 updates, but you will need to
apply
updates
released after SP2.
