Keep you next child, please.....

Anyhow, how you do this depends on what you have. For a regular retail
version of WinXP, you should boot the CD and follow the new installation
prompts. If you have a preinstalled system with recovery disks, you should
follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Greetings --

Simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered
the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part of
the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

First at Power on hit the machine's hot key to enter BIOS setup. Likely
to be DEL or F2 or maybe another F key; there is usually a 'hit x to
enter setup' if you bash at the keyboard during Power on memory count.

There set to Boot from CD: either a BIOS setup page, use arrow key down
to Boot Order, then PageDn to cycle settings to get CDRom;C:;. . .
or if there is a specific Boot page, on that arrow key down to the CD
drive; use the number pad + key to push it top.

Either way hit ESC, have the XP CD in the drive; go to Exit and Save
settings, and you will reboot, booting the CD itself (you may have to
hit a key in confirmation).

Then when it comes to a menu, take 'Setup Windows', and after hitting
F8 to accept the license agreement, the license agreement take New
Install. When it asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select (arrow keys
again) and delete the current partition where XP is, and make a new RAW
one to be formatted at the next stage

The important point is the delete. Without that it will just go ahead
and make a new install over the top of the old one

Updates will have to be run again, especially SP1 if it is not on the
CD.

It is important to activate the basic XP Firewall before you ever
connect to the net to get the patches, so as to be protected against
things like the BLAST worm.
You will then have to activate the system again, on the internet - I
would wait a few days before doing so to make sure all is well - but
don't forget; you get 30 and keep some in hand!. Then get on the net
and go to
Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Activate Windows
when 'Activate on the internet now' will take about 20 seconds
