I purchased a copy of windows xp home but I found out that it was not
genuine... So, paying for my mistakes, I went out and bought the real McCoy
from Bureau en Gros (Office Depot). I waited for the 30 days to expire for
the first copy, I thought that it would be deleted and I tried to install the
real thing. But then when I put the new CD in the CD drive,it would not
start from it, but it still runs on the bad version that remained in the
computer. Since my computer knowledge is limited, could someone tell me how
to uninstall the bad version (first copy) and install the good one. My
computer is partitionned in two so I don't think I have to loose all my stuff
that I have saved to it. Basically I was told to boot from disk but my
computer does not want. Help Pleeeeaaaase!
Thank you in advance,

Actually thier correct in "boot from cd",simply install new copy of xp,restart
computer, open the BIOS,in the BIOS,advanced, look for boot priority or
similiar,
change to cd 1st (with xp),then the hd,save and exit BIOS.Once at xp cd boot
screen,select "install xp" new copy,delete the partition,create one,then xp
formats and installs auto....If you bought the upgrade version, you'll be
asked
to briefly install an older windows OS cd,otherwise if you dont have
one,you'll
go no further,or buy the full xp version....

Thanks Andrew E, but all this is chinese to me... I tried to put the new
version (not an upgrade but the full version) into the cd drive and start the
computer... But the old version the one that is probably pirated still comes
on and asks me to legitimize it by registering the product key... How do I
get rid of it? The wise guys who told me to reboot have about as much
knowledge of computers as I do...
You say simply install new copy... But new copy although full version does
not want to be installed as the computer goes on to the old (pirated)
version, not wanting to read the new version from the disk.
You will probably think I'm computer illiterate (you are right if you do)
but at this point I do not know how to open the ''Bios'' or where I look for
booth priority not to talk about the similars...
All I need to know (I think) is how to get rid of the old copy and then
easy, I could simply install the new copy.
Sorry for sounding so dumb but this is my first ''fight'' with a computer as
I used to have someone taking care of it for me before.
Thanks

Hi, Marie. Andrew E. is a newsgroup troll and normally gives bad,
unintelligible, and/or destructive advice. Ignore him.

You aren't installing the new operating system correctly. First, make
sure you've backed up all your data because you are going to do a clean
install and everything on the machine now will be gone.

Here are links to walk you through the process:

http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html - Clean Install How-To
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#reinstall_Windows - What
you will need on-hand

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Hello Andrew

What the heck is all this rumbling and nonsense. If you do not know the answer then do not post. It is very bad advice and can further complicate the OP's issue\concern

Have you gone into the BIOS setup program and changed the boot sequence to
boot from the CD first? If you haven't and don't know how, let us know and
we'll help you.

Hello Andrew

You must be new here. This is Andrew E., our resident troll. He always posts
incoherent, useless, and often downright malicious advice.

If you do not know the answer then do not post.

Alas, in true Troll fashion, he will completely ignore you, as he ignores
the rest of us. He knows next to nothing, but posts prolifically, and ignore
all messages pointing out his errors.

First, thank you to all for trying to help me.
Last night (or early this morning), I got fed up with it all and simply
entered the new product key number and clicked on the ''next '' box. I got a
message saying that since the 30 day period had expired I had to register
through the phone and got a series of numbers a mile long that I had to give
to the person on the phone. Since it was late, I copied the numbers down and
closed the computer. This morning, when I got it back on, I was told that I
was successfully registered!!!
But it seems I am not at the end of my problems... I still have things
popping up on my computer: Ladies in scanty panties, offers to buy virus
protection so I decided to run the Live OneCare full service scan. So far it
has detected 2 High Issues and 13 items and says it is unable to clean them.
Also, from time to time (every two minutes or so) I get this pop up screen
telling me about warnings of viruses and if I click on it it sends me to a
site where I have to purchase a virus protection. I don't know if the
viruses it says I have are excuses to buy from them or real.

Now, what do I do?

Hi! It seems to be working!!! Live OneCare seems to have worked after all!!!
I just got anxious and did not click on the right things... But I have a
feeling that it should be virus free for now, because when I type something I
don't get the delay I used to before. And for the past five or so minutes I
did not get pop ups urging me to visit or to buy. I keep my fingers crossed.

Bless you all for helping!

Hello Mr Blake

Yes I am new. My Dad is the 1 that always posted but unfortunately he had a bad stroke about 1 1\2 months ago and I am using his servers. Thank you for pointing out the issue with the poster to whom I answered. Noted and marked for next time

Hello Miss\Mrs Marie

I have copied this from one of Miss\Mrs Malke posts and I hope she will not mind. I think if you follow her advice then you might successfully remove those Malware\Trojan\Viruses

<Snip>
This is common behavior for a lot of virus/malware programs. There's no way
for us to tell you what you've picked up except that you've definitely
picked up *something*.

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

Include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV plus Ewido. Make sure you
do all the prep/finishing work and follow the instructions to do all scans
in Safe Mode.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

<End of snip>

Thank you in advance,

After backing up any data that you want to preserve, simply boot
from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be offered the opportunity to
delete, create, and format partitions as part of the installation
process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of boot devices in the
PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then reinstall your applications and restore the backed up data.

Don't worry about it. Everything Andrew writes is pretty much
"Chinese" to pretty much everyone. When he's not deliberately offering
harmful "advice," Andrew is consistently demonstrating his complete
unfamiliarity with the English language.

I'm really sorry to hear that, Daphne. Please give him best wishes for a
speedy recovery from me. We never met in Real Life(tm) but I "know" him
from these newsgroups.

Hello Miss\Mrs Malke

I definitely will pass it along. I now had to take a sabbatical from college to run Dad's business. This is what supplies the Family. His computer business is a bit very hard on me but I am crawling along at a slow pace trying not to make any mistakes and not to lose any of our corporate customers. These darn servers of his is driving me batty. Why cannot he be like everyone else and use XP . Oh Well

Thank you
