Windows-XP Home, ,wireless network

I hooked up a wireless router/DSL to link my desktop and laptop for file
sharing and internet access. Desktop is hard-wired using cat-5 cable and
accesses internet OK. Laptop is using wireless card and accesses the internet
OK. I have enabled file and printer sharing and cannot seem to see the
"shares" from either machine. I have successfully done this many times
before and am getting frustrated and the mystery as to why it won't work. Any
ideas? Could I have misses something so obvious? The firewall is the built-in
Windows Firewall.
Thanks;

If you are running SP2 make sure the firewall has an exception for file and
printer sharing enabled. Also, if these machines were previously configured
on a different network, check the scope of the exception and make sure it is
not configured for some other subnet. Also, check any third party security
software.

algrossi,

Did you able to network your laptop, pc and printer?

I want to do same thing but I don't know how to do it?

Once you are successful can you pl tell me steps?

Thanks,

The exceptions are OK and the internet access is OK on both machines. The
only thing I cannot access is the "Shared Printer"and the "My
Documents"folders. I don't know the network layers that well to be able to
diagnose what layer is not configured properly.

Try: On the desktop click Start/Run \\IPaddressofLaptop ENTER - what
happens?

I never heard of the command \\IPaddressofLaptop but the reply is:
"The network path was not found"
When I ping the latop's IP address it looks OK.
When I ping 127.0.0.1 it's OK.
When I ping its computer name it's OK.
The only failure is when I ping the laptop's name or its IP address from the
desktop.
What's missing?

OK - what I meant was if the IP address of the laptop is 192.168.1.3, then
on the Desktop click Start/Run \\192.168.1.3 ENTER. Is this what you did?

Sorry, I misunderstood - but I just ranhe command and it "timed out"
looks like the laptop can see the desktop but the desktop cannot see the
laptop.

Since we know that both machines can access the Internet, we also know that
they have compatible IP addresses. The inability to ping the laptop's IP
address strongly suggests a firewall or firewall-like security program. Are
you running Norton, McAfee or some other AV/security software? These
products frequently include 'features' which must be configured to allow
file sharing.

Looks like you hit the nail on the head. My old laptop was using Zonalarm and
I had it configured properly for this task. Since the old one died, I
purchased a new Dell laptop and it came with McAfee "Security Center"which
includes a firewall. I now configured it to accept the IP address range
which my LAN uses and all is OK.
Thank you for your patience - I suppose I was becoming discouraged.
Thank you again;

Doug,

Can you explain me steps or any link for establishing this network? I want
to do same thing?

Thanks in advance.
