Windows XP Home will not shut down

I just done a fresh reinstall of windows xp home. My
machine worked fine until I started reloading the security
updates and updated drivers. After updating the drivers I
was unable to shutdown my computer. When I tried to shut
it down it would try to restart an hang up on the splash
screen. I tried to restore to a previous time before the
drivers were loaded but still had same problem only way to
shut down my pc is to kill the power. Can anyone help?
