Windows XP Home w/ SP2

Hi,

I just installed SP2 on my computer and the firewall is *not* automatically
enabled. When I try to enable it, I find all options are grayed with a
checkmark in the "off" box. It says: For your security, some settings are
controlled by Group Policy.

I am signed on as Owner with Adminstrative privileges. This computer is my
server on a home network of 3. How can I turn on my firewall?

Is you are using Active Directory you have to use group policy settings.

Since WinXP Home *cannot* be part of a domain, group policies can't
really apply. There's something else wrong.

Check for malware that may be imitating group policy.

You're right. I guess it pays to read the title of the post. I didn't see XP
Home anywhere in the body.

Kris: Check if the Windows Firewall/Intenet Connection Sharing (ICS)
service is started and set to Automatic. Also are you running Norton
Internet Security or any other firewall programs?

and network connections. ICS is working on both my other computers. I don't
know where to find the automatic setting you mention. If you tell me how to
find it, I'll check.

By malware, I assume you mean some unwanted program that is taking over some
process in my computer. Is that right? I had just done a thorough virus and
spyware scan prior to downloading SP2. There was infection there as I had
disabled my XP Home firewall in an effort to get my 2 clients to be able to
share from my server. I don't want to operate w/o a firewall. Does that
answer your question? Everything found was deleted or cleaned.

on it. The Startup Type should be Automatic and the Service Status should
say Started. If it doesn't try clicking on the Start button. Let us know if

hijacked your pc. You should try a few online scans in "Safe Mode with
networking" The one at this link has worked for me.
