Windows XP Home Update Registration Repair

Greetings,

I had to do a system recovery on my old HP of XP Home.

XP was not happy and I had to do the recovery 6 times.
I got to reinstall all the many warm and fuzzy applications that
HP so helpfully also reinstalls with a system recovery.

It finally took but I had a glitch during registration at the
windows update page. I got and installed SP1 and SP2
manually from other pages at microsoft thinking that
would resolve the problem. That was not the case.

The glitch was a power failure while the update
page said 100% registered. Murphy was right on time.

The bad registration process has the result that I am not
offered any updates options when I visit the windows
update page and I am not getting automatic updates.

The Security Center tells me it cannot change the
windows update settings and I must use the
control panel windows update folder.

The Windows Update folder in the control panel does
not open and windows update does not open in the
My Computer properties window.

I am looking for windows xp home update registration repair
without having to play the HP system recovery crapshoot again,
if possible.

Thanks in advance.

An update about my problems with updates.

I found and tried reinstalling the windows update programs.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/cab/x86/unicode/iuctl.cab

I opened windows update and saw a new message and was
happy. It told me the update software had been updated. I tapped
ok and now it says
Windows update is downloading and installing the updated software
registering 100%...

The little windows flag in the top right corner is not moving.

thanks again,
