Windows XP Home to Pro Upgrade Problem

I recently bought a Dell computer with XP Home and purchased a XP
professional, and Office 2003 through a license Microsoft has with Ohio
State, where I am a student. I tried to install XP pro but get a message
that windows has been shut down to prevent damage to my computer and I have
to reboot. On reboot I get a choice of loading XP Home Edition or Pro Setup.
Pro Setup just gives me the same error but Home loads up fine. Is there any
fix for this? I'll post the exact error message later this evening. Thanks!

If you have SP2 installed on your home edition you may
want to roll it back the retry installing Pro.

Nate: If the XP Professional that you got is the full version, then I would
suggest you stop before you regret trying to install. To upgrade from the
home version SP1 to XP Pro, you need to use the upgrade version, not the full
version. If SP2 is installed, then this aplies after you remove SP2. I found
out the hard way that Pro Full will cause nothing but problems if you try to
use it as an upgrade version. Good Luck

There should be little difference between Upgrade and Full except that
Upgrade will ask for proof of ownership of a prior version of Windows. Full
will find the existing installation of Windows and offer to upgrade anyway.
Roll back SP2 before you start. Of course one option is to use the Files
and Settings Transfer Wizard to save your files and settings and then do a
clean install. As long as you have disks for all your programs, there
should be little problems.

Colin: That is what I assumed also, there should be no
difference. However, I found on a software site the
warning "do not use full version to upgrade". Of course
this was after I used the full version to upgrade. LOL I
had more issues than any other time after doing so. Best
to use the upgrade version. Just want to forwarn!

To upgrade from the
home version SP1 to XP Pro, you need to use the upgrade version, not the full
version.

The full version is capable of an upgrade or a clean install.
If SP2 is installed, then this aplies after you remove SP2.

True and reapply after the upgrade is complete.

No, this isn't correct. Both the Full version and the Upgrade
version can do either an upgrade or a clean installation.

You are perhaps thinking of the OEM version, which can *not* do
an upgrade.
