Windows XP Home suddenly fails to start

I turn on my computer and it gives me an error
message ....caused by the following
file: "Apfltr.sys".....driver unloaded without unloading
pending operation. I try to use several startup options
such as "safe mode" and "most recent settings that worked"
only to watch the computer shut down and start the process
all over again on its own. All I know is I was on the
internet last night and when I hit the Internet explorer
button it opened several windows and my system slowed but
no problems after a few minutes. Help!

Are you sure you typed that right?
Apfltr.sys gets no hits on Google, even without .sys.
