How do I obtain this? Every Microsoft reference seems to say you must use the
Automatic Update function, but when I turn this on and look at the offered
updates, SP@ is not shown as an update. I can no longer find anywhere to
simply download the file to install myself. Suggestions would be appreciated.

This is the SP2 file you can download then install on one or more machines
(Windows XP Home or Professional)

My personal advice is not to install SP2, it has totaled one of
customers PC's after "automatic updates" installed it.. Now I have to
rebuild the whole PC from the ground up to get her working again because
the PC will not run any apps including the SP2 uninstall.. A very
expensive exercise for a little home user who put her faith in MS updates..

We have millions and millions of installed SP2 without any issues at all.
It is poor advice to say to not install it.
If you follow al the advice to ensure you are ready to install SP2 you
should have no issues at all.

That is not typical, certainly not for a well maintained computer.
Nothing can guarantee no problems, but preparation can go a long way in that
direction:

The majority of Windows XP computers need SP-2.
The decision not to install should be based on many things and a single
failure is in itself almost meaningless.
