I require more variability and flexibility when writing.
The fonts that came with this package are very basic and
do not allow for enhancements. Am I obligated to purchase
a software package, separate from what came with xp home?
I am new to computers and therefore unfamiliar with the
software.

WinXP Home is an operating system and, as such, naturally does not
have any sort of advanced word processing capabilities. If you need
such, then yes, you need to purchase and install a compatible
application that meets your individual needs.

I'm not sure what you're asking; there seem to be two issues
here.

First of all, what program are you using to write with? Neither
Windows XP, nor any other version of Windows, has ever come with
real word processing software. Windows comes with two very
primitive programs: Notepad, and the slightly more capable
Wordpad. If you need more flexibility, you need to acquire real
word processing software. There are many choices, for example
Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, StarOffice, or the freeware
OpenOffice.

If it's fonts that are the issue, most word processing software
will come with many additional fonts. Others can either be bought
or downloaded fom the internet. A google search on "fonts" should
turn up many choices.
