Windows XP Home edition doesn't recognize JVC camcorder

I just bought a new Hp pc pavallion model a530e came ith
XP home edition, I have a firewire card model IEEE 1394
OHCI Compliant Host Controller in the pc, My mini DV
camcorder is made by JVC, model # GR-D90U
When I plug in my camcorder to the PC it doesn't
recognize my camcorder. I spoke to Hp and JVC both,
nobody seems to be helpful. They keep blaming each other.
I was talking to somebody and was told that I need some
patch from microsoft. Please advise asap.
Thanks

Are you sure the Firewire IEEE 1394 is working? Have you
tried it with some other device?

Did the camcorder come with any software and did you install
that before connecting the camcorder?

Are there any switches on the camcorder to put it in a data
transfer mode?

Greetings --

Does that model camera work with other (non-HP) WinXP
installations? If not, what specific Windows patch did that
"somebody" tell you that you needed? Once you know that, you can
download it.

Microsoft Download Center
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?

However, I'm skeptical of your getting much help, especially by
means of a rumored patch. (JVC would be aware of, and direct you to,
any known, necessary generic Windows patch, I should think.) Support
and rectification of problems with your OEM version of WinXP is solely
and entirely the responsibility of the OEM, HP. If HP's brushed you
off, odds are that the issue is something specific to their customized
version of the OS, but which they've not bothered to fix.

I'm not sure. I have an HP 750n. I had a similar problem
with an external Firewire BusLink CD writer and also a
external Firewire hard drive not being recognized by
winxp. Then one day they both were recognized. I don't
know if it was because of all the Winxp updates, or what.
Did you check your firewall settings just incase it is
preventing access? I don't really know why they work now,
just grateful.

That same model PC with an IEEE 1394 PCI card installed has no problem
recognizing a Sony DV camcorder. As Jim has suggested, make sure the
card is working. Open Device Manager, see if the card is listed and
XP has installed drivers. Then try attaching another Firewire device
to see if that's being recognized.

Not all Firewire cards are created equal.....
