When I start my Win XP Home Edition, I get the following message :

A problem has been detected and windows has been sgut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen,
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware of software is properly installed.
If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for
any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or
software.
Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing.
If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart
your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then
select Safe Mode.

I have tried to enter Safe Mode but it failed...
How can I repair it without using the installation CD?

Thanks!

Power off
Desktop:...Open the case and reseat the hard drive IDE ribbon cable at
both ends.
Laptop:... simply remove and reinsert the hard drive.
If that fails:

Otherwise go to the website of the hard drive manufacturer and
download their hard drive diagnostics.

Do you have a hard drive overlay such as Max Blast?
Windows XP sometimes has issues with overlay software.
You may need to perform a Clean Installation without their overlay
software which is not needed anyway.

Thanks! Is there any methods that I can start my computer in NTFS system?
I think I just need to scan my harddisk with "CHKDSK /f"

"start my computer in NTFS system"?
NTFS is the file system not a method of starting.

Simply follow the directions on the link to run chkdsk.

What I want to do is that boot my computer using floppy in NTFS and then run
CHKDSK /f....

When I tried to use the floppy setup boot disk (WinXP_EN_HOM_BF.EXE) to
repair, I got the following message :

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen
restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow
these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed
hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive
to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then
restart your computer.

I don't have the XP CD. What else I can do?

Thanks!

That is the correct file as long as you have Windows XP Home WITHOUT a
Service Pack.
If you have a Service pack, go back and download the correct set.

Otherwise the download or making of the disks nay be damaged.

Did you check the hard drive with hard drive diagnostics?
This can help tell if the drive is physically sound.

I can successfully use the NTFS reader to read and copy the files in the
NTFS partition and so I think the harddisk can work. I tried to use the
correct SP floppies boot disk to repair but I still got the same error
message....

You could

(1) use the Win XP evaluation version to boot up into recovery
console and recover the data, or

(2) go to knoppix site and d/l the knopiix 3.4 iso and burn a
knoppix 3.4 boot cd. (Knoppix is a linux os). I have use knoppix
3.4 successfully to recover from Win XP blue screen errors. It can
read ntfs partitions/data and can read/write into usb devices.

Hope that helps.

Hello Root,

I used the Knoppix 3.4 to start my computer. I could access the NTFS
partition. However, I could not find any command like "chkdsk". How can I
repair my Win XP in Knoppix?

Thanks!
