windows xp home edition and vpn connection on local network (for domain authentication)

I have a user who has Windows XP Home edition on his laptop. Because of
this he cannot authenticate to our doman in the office without a vpn
connection. I therefore set this up and now he can get his exchange email
as well as access his files. The problem I am having is that when he is on
the vpn, he cannot get on the internet through the proxy server. A strange
thing happens when the vpn is connected, 3 routes in the routing table
become metric 50. I have included a screen capture of the routing table
before and after the vpn connection. My question is, how can I get the
internet connection to work while he is on the vpn without effecting him
drastically when he leaves the office and tries to get online at home.

It probably has nothing to do with the routing. InW2k/XP the proxy
server settings are connection specific. If you want to use a proxy server
from a dialup (RAS or VPN) the proxy address must be set up for that
connection.

On the client, go to Internet Options. Select the connection you use and
set the proxy server address there. It can be different from the proxy
server setting on the LAN if necessary.

This problem seems to be specific to Windows XP. I don't have this problem
with Windows 2000.

Thanks Bill, that worked on the XP machine. Not sure why XP and W2k do it
differently though.
