Windows XP floppy drive cache

I have installed Win XP Prof on a pc with PII 533 processor and Norton AV.
the problem is that when i want to shut down or log off WinXP, NAV asks to
remove the floppy disk before shut down, but there is no floppy disk in
drive so i have to end task the NAV which is harmful for the system security
against viruses.
I checked to see why this happens and surprisingly saw that when i open the
floppy disk in WinExplorer it shows that content of the last floppy in drive
and i can even open files by double clicking on them. (seems that Windows
has cached everything that were on that floppy disk and no application open
command fails opening files on the floppy drive while there is no floppy
disk)
I have installed Win XP with NAV on other computers too but there happens no
such a problem!
If any1 can help
thank ya and sorry 4 the long post.

You have a hardware problem. One of the signal lines in the ribbon
cable for the floppy drive tells the system when there has been a disk
change. Apparently the system isn't getting this signal.

Look inside the case. Check if any header pins on the motherboard or on
the floppy drive are bent. Check for damage to the ribbon cable. See
if you have a really old floppy drive that has a jumper on it for
enabling/disabling the change disk signal line.

As a double check, boot using a DOS floppy and then check if sliding in
another floppy still has DIR report the contents of the first floppy.
Go to http://www.bootdisk.com for bootable floppy images you can write
onto a floppy.

Good diagnosis on your part.

You have a bad "Media Change Line" signal from the floppy. The system has
not been informed that the disk has been removed.

There are two fixes:
1. The problem may be dirt. Check the drive carefully an obstructed sensor
or you can just use canned-air to blow all the crap to kingdom-come.
2. If your hand fits a screwdriver and you have $15 for a new floppy drive,
just replace the drive.
