Windows XP Fax Services

I am wondering how to set up Windows to send and receive faxes. When I tried
to add this feature the wizard told me I needed the Windows XP professional
service pack 2 CD. I do not have this CD. Are there any ways around this?

This is from XP Help and Support:
Using Fax
Fax provides you with complete fax facilities from your computer. You can
configure fax settings, send and receive faxes, track and monitor fax
activity, and access archived faxes. Using Fax, you can choose to send and
receive faxes with a local fax device attached to your computer, or with a
remote fax device connected to fax resources located on a network.

Fax is not installed by default during Windows Setup.

To install the Fax component

1.. Open Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel.
2.. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
3.. In the Windows Components Wizard, select the Fax Services check box,
and then follow the instructions on your screen.
Notes

a.. To open Fax after installation, click Start, point to All Programs,
point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click Fax Console.
b.. For more information on using Fax, click Help in Fax Console.

Easier to install it prior to installing SP2 than after it - not impossible,
but a little tricky after SP2 is installed

Have a look in c:\windows\i386 and c:\windows\system32\dllcache for the
files that the wizard prompts for

ie

fxscfgwz.dll
fxsclntR.dll
fxscount.h (expand from fxscount.h_ )
fxsperf.ini (expand from fxsperf.in_ )
fxsroute.dll
fxssend.dll

Copy them to c:\windows\system32

(you will need to "expand" some of the files before copying
eg to expand fxscount.h_ to fxscount.h use the command "expand fxscount.h_
fxscount.h" at a command prompt)

These files should NOT be placed in c:\windows\system32 but in these
locations...

fxsext.ecf ( expanded from fxsext.ec_ ) in c:\windows\addins

Place the .cov files in

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows
NT\MSFAX\Common Coverpages

(create the MSFAX and "Common Coverpages" subfolders if they don't already
exist)

ie
confdent.cov (expanded from confdent.co_ )
fyi.cov (expanded from fyi.co_ )
generic.cov (expanded from generic.co_ )
urgent.cov (expanded from urgent.co_ )

When all the files are in position the installation should proceed smoothly

I know this is an OLD thread, BUT...

I had tried to install Win XP Fax also, got the 'need SP2 CD' notification,
ordered the SP2 CD, tried to install and got zip. Nada. Then further research
told me I had to expand a long list of files, which I did, then tried to
install, and I had success..or so I thought. Start/All
programs/Accessories/Communications/Fax...EMPTY!!!

I followed Jon's instructions, making certain the files are expanded and in
the correct directories (they are), and STILL have an empty Fax program file.
My modem works, I get indications of a successful install, click on Finish,
but ... nothing.

Win XP Sp2, Dell Latitude C610 (laptop) integral PCtel 2304WT V.9x MDC Modem
Data/Fax (got this from the diagnostics Query Log). The modem can dial out
with no problem, and diagnostics indicates that it is functioning properly.

I have Windows XP Home Edition. The intruction given so far gives you a much
weak fax program. It allows only a fax cover to be sent: not any pages
beyound that. I will be posting a question about upgrading to XP
Professional: if it has a true fax program

You can add scanned images, text files, etc. you just need to read more
about it. A few things you missed by not reading the Help files:

To send a fax from a Windows application
Open or create the document in any Windows application that has a print
option.
On the File menu, click Print, select an installed fax printer from the
drop-down list, and then click OK.
Follow the instructions in Send Fax Wizard.

To send a scanned document
Verify that you have a scanner installed. For more information, see
Scanners and Cameras Help.
Use the Imaging Preview application to scan the document. For more
information on using scanning devices, see Image Preview Help.
In the Imaging Preview application, press CTRL+P to print the image.
Select an installed fax printer from the drop-down list and then click OK.

You can also send a cover page fax from the Start menu. Click Start,
click All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, point
to Fax, and then click Send a fax.

From Fax Console and the Start menu you can only send a cover page fax,
and you enter your fax message as the cover page note. A cover page fax
is useful for short fax messages. You cannot send attachments with a
cover page fax.

If you fax a document from a Windows application the Send Fax Wizard
opens, and you can choose whether to include a cover page with your fax.

There are many more helpful instructions, but basically, to send other
than a coversheet with a quick message, you open scanner software, word
processor, etc., and "print" to the fax.
