Hi There.

When going to Control Panel, Add or Remove Software, Add/Remove Windows
Component I get the following error message:
"The installation library for component fax could not be initialized"
After clicking Ok I see the normal windows, except the Fax option isn't in
the list.

I checked the FaxSetup.log file and the message I got follows:

I'm a new Windows XP user but seems to me that I have to correct the
SourcePath or something like that.
The point is: what should be the path? What do I have to change and fix the
problem once for all?

Regards.

Depends on what your original installation medium was, which you failed to
mention.

If your installation of Windows XP was from a CD, you will be prompted to
insert the CD and may need to browse to the i386 Folder so the installation
routine can find the necessary files. If you have applied SP1, these files
may have been moved to a different folder (ServicePackFiles\i386), and you
will need to direct the routine to that folder.

If your installation was performed by an OEM (original equipment
manufacturer), it will be the responsibility of the OEM to supply those
files. Unfortunately, the installation disks supplied by many OEM's do not
contain the necessary files and you will need to contact the OEM to obtain
them. The fax installation files are not available to download from
Microsoft.

Hi Russ.

The original installation media is a CD-ROM.
I tried use the original CD but got no success.
I don't know if extra command lines are needed.
Can you help me on that?
Is there any extra info that you need?

Regards.

I got the exact same message. Have you come up with anything? I contact
Compaq because in your thread, Microsoft claims that OEM needs to supply
that, but Compaq says it's Microsoft.

I think a total Re-Install will fix it, but I sure don't want to do that.

I am having exactly the same problem as described above:
When going to Control Panel, Add or Remove Software, Add/Remove Windows
Component I get the following error message:
"The installation library for component fax could not be initialized"
After clicking Ok I see the normal windows, except the Fax option isn't in
the list.

This problem has been reported many times but no-one has posted a
solution.
Some questions that might help us fix it:
1. What files are supposed to be in the "installation library"
2. Is there a way of fooling the Add/Remove Windows Component Wizard
into thinking the fax insatllation library needs to be reinstalled?
3. What files is the Add/Remove Windows Component Wizard looking for
when it tries to initialize the library?
4. Can someone post a list of all the files required to make the XP
fax service work and the directories they are supposed to be in.

PS I have installed SP2 thinking it would fix the problem but it made
no difference

Please help
