The haunting

I bought my computer 5 years ago from a local computer store. A friend
recently told me the win xp operating system I have is not genuine but
fake. The computer store I bought it from is no longer in business.
(Not a very reputable place obviously)

How do I fix the problem ? Now I can't download IE 7 or other software
from the updates page. Anyone recommend the best course of action ?

Thanks

The only option you might have is to go to a retailer like WalMart or Bestbuy
and buy a new copy of windows.

Or, save your money, wait a few months, and buy a nice new shiney comptuer
with Vista. If Vista ever gets released.

The choice is obvious......

Install Linux

or pull out your wallet, buy a copy from WalMart
boot off cd and perform a "repair install"

have fun

Go to a reputable vendor and buy a legit copy. Avoid anything labeled "not
for resale" or "only to be sold with a new computer".

I recall something about MS offering a special deal for people who don't
have legit Windows copies, but I can't remember if it was ongoing or just a
one time deal. Maybe somebody else has a link.

Please follow this WGA troubleshooting procedure:

1. Download and install the WGA Diagnostic Tool:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

2. After running the WGA Diagnostic Tool, click
on the "Validation" tab and then click on "Copy to Clipboard".

3. Next, visit the following website and create a post in the
"WGA Validation Problems" forum and paste the
results of the WGA Diagnostic Data in your post.
http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/default.aspx?SiteID=25

4. A WGA troubleshooting specialist will analyze the data and
recommend an appropriate solution.

Technically, there is always a way to get the updates. However, You can
purchase OEM licenses from mutiple vendors that come with the disk and
the license only. If your current license is not legitimate, you most
likely haven't used Microsoft directly for phone support (One of the
primary reasons Original Equipment Manufacturer-OEM software is
cheaper).
If you do feel as though you may need Technical support (please follow
the other suggestions first to ensure your license is truly invalid)
then a retailed purchased copy would most likely be your best bet.
Online options such as TigerDirect.com are very reputable firms.

Although a Linux distribution is always an option as suggested below,
it still requires a basic understanding of how computers work and
operate.

Good luck, I hope this helps.

Obviously, you will get no satisfaction from them.
Nor will you get any satisfaction from Microsoft, since they don't
support third-party OEM software.

Your best recourse is to go to Amazon.com and purchase a Genuine
Generic OEM XP Pro (produced by Microsoft, with totally legal COA and
CD key, including FULL COLOR, extremely distinct (not washed-out
silver) official Microsoft holograms filling entire disc, GUARANTEED)
for about $146 (includes 2nd-day Fedex shipping).

(Note that this MUST be installed "clean"), so back up your data
before attempting to install it.

Sorry, my friend, but this is the best information I can give. I can
only say that I examined MANY, MANY sites selling "Oem" versions for
many, many days, and while others may be cheaper, they are almost ALL
"pulls" (which will almost be guaranteed to cause you to activate via
phone, if they will even activate it for you at all. I personally
purchased an official genuine Microsoft Generic OEM XP Pro from
Amazon, and am quite happy with it. I ordered it on a Friday, and it
arrived by the following Tuesday.

ESPECIALLY, do NOT purchase XP from a seller on eBay under ANY
circumstance, since you will almost surely be guaranteed to get an
unlicensable copy.

Is there any problems with the system? If the answer is no then why
worry? you bought the license in good faith (in an open market i
presume) and so under any laws of the land, you are entitled to use it
and if it fails, you have right to sue the maker of that software.

No, the choice is not obvious. Majority of top companies are using MS
products and if you want to trade/deal with them, you don't have the
obvious choice. We are not talking about hobby users here!!
