Windows XP Explorer is slooooooooow !!

Windows XP Explorer is very slow in displaying the folder
list when clicking on "c" drive.

How slow ? ...60 to 90 seconds.

The drive is 20G, with about 10G used in 2-3000 files.
There are the usual "Windows" and "Documents & Settings"
folders from XP, plus about 100 that I have added.
The computer is a Sony 2.8 GH P4 with 512 meg ram.
And this is AFTER defragging and deleting all *.tmp files.

In comparison, my 1Gh laptop running Windows 2000 pro will
read a 20G drive with 10 g used in about 6000 files and
about 500 folders in under 3 seconds!!

Any thoughts on how to speed up windows XP explorer ??

Thanks in advance for any comments...

Dale;
Run an updated virus scan.
Or Scan for Viruses online:
http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp?j=1&langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=IRLFIZTYMWPAZTJWUFJ
Run Disk Cleanup checking all boxes except "Compress old files"
(Windows XP)
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Clean-up
Run Defrag.
Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter
If you have file sharing software such as Kazaa, disable it.
Check this link:

Run Ad-Aware (free version) or Spybot to check for spyware:

Or

This may apply if you recently installed Windows XP Service Pack 1:
