Windows XP Explorer (file manager) scroll problem

Hi,

I've noticed several times in the last few months that
my Sony PCGR505 notebook with XP Home installed has
several problems relating to scrolling. When using the
down arrow while scrolling through a document - usually e-
mail, it is impossible to scroll to view the whole
document because the scroll action will not be continuous
througout the document but will snap to an extreme - the
top or the bottom of the document. I see this same problem
on ocassion on my desktop PC at work that runs XP Pro.

It may not be related, but I have also seen the text /
graphics on a WEB page smear if I try to scroll before the
page is fully loaded. It usually corrects by itself but
sometimes I have to refresh the page. This is also a
fairly recent problem.

Recently, I have seen the same sort of smearing in Windows
Explorer (file manager) if I do a search for a common file
type and wind up with a long list of documents. It
happened the other day looking for JPEGS and it didn't
matter whether I was in thumbnail mode (not all the
thumbnails generated and explorer locked up) or in details
mode where only text is displayed. Even if I wait for the
search to complete, I'll get smearing of the file names in
a regular pattern until finally the scroll bars no longer
respond the program locks up or aborts and generates an
error report.

It's difficult to pinpoint exactly when all this started
but I've been performing security updates on a regular
basis from the windows site and keeping my virus program
current. Anyone heard of any problems like mine after any
recent updates?

is smooth scrolling still on? noticed updates can change
some random system settings.one change has been that your
high speed modem can wake the computer from standby, when
it was set as don't wake the computer before the update.
