Windows XP doesn't Boot on FIRST Bootup

P

Peter Reaper

Ever since I installed a faster CPU (was: Athlon 2500+, now: Athlon
3200+) Windows XP SP2 will not load when I turn on my PC. Only after
pressing the Reset button will Windows boot up.

Is there a way to "fix" this, so Windows will load when I first turn on
my PC?

Thank You!

PS. The dxdiag output is attached for reference of my system's specs.

When in doubt, blame the power supply. That's the first thing I'd
swap. It doesn't sound like a software problem.

That is almost always due to a hardware related issue. Some component
or other is not functioning properly when the computer is first turned
on. However after the computer has been on for a short period the
component warms up and then starts to function correctly.

These are almost impossible to diagnose, as any test procedure is
going to result in the application of power to the component and it
will therefore probably warm up and start to function normally before
the test is underway.

The only way to fix this type of problem is to start replacing
components one at a time until the problem goes away. At that point
you will know that the last item you replaced was the culprit.

I would probably live with a problem such as this, at least until such
time as the situation got worse, and there was either an error
message, or BIOS beep indication of the underlying cause.

Good luck

I doubt it's the power supply as the problem did not occur before I
upgraded the CPU and the power supply is relatively new and a very good one.

My current *guess* is that the system now boots so quickly that the hard
drive doesn't have enough time to "spin up".

You're right that the problem isn't annoying enough to justify the
effort of replacing all components in search of a cause.

Anyhow, I think the cause is likely elsewhere: My current *guess* is
that the system now boots so quickly that the hard drive doesn't have
enough time to "spin up".

Is there any "tool" that could delay Windows' loading for a few seconds?
