display problem after hard disk formatting

Hi all. I´ve recently formatted my hard drive and reinstalled Win XP SP2.
After that, I just couldn´t get the display to work like before. I bought
the computer about a year ago, and had never had any kind of display problem
before.

Basically, there was no improvement when I reinstalled the latest Nvidia
drivers (I have Geforce FX 5200). Color quality is very bad, its just like
if I had just left the Windows basic VGA driver. If I remove the Nvidia
drivers via Add/Remove programs, display remains the same. I also tried
using previous nvidia drivers, but it was just the same. Monitor and
motherboard drivers are correctly installed.

Any ideas/help would be really appreciated. If not, I'll just have to try
formatting again, I guess.

Yes, I did change the color quality setting several times but it just
doesn't really improve.

Although it says 32 bit, what I'm really seeing is something like 256
colors.

But in the diagnostic, AGP is listed as disabled?

You're right, I had just disabled AGP in the dxdiag program before saving
the information I included in my post.. now it's enabled again (no real
change).

You appear to have covered all aspects, But..........
How exactly is your Graphics card detailed in Device Manager?
When installing drivers the accepted route to upgrade is via the
entry in device manager - Not Add/Remove Programs!

Nvidia drivers ("forceware") are included in a 30 Mb .exe file, and they can
be uninstalled that way. Anyway, I also tried removing them from the device
manager (deleting the display adapter), and the effect was the same. After I
restarted, I had a "standard VGA adapter" or something like that, but what I
see is the same.

RIGHT click "My Computer"
Select "Properties"
the "System Properties" dialog appears,
Click the "Hardware" tab
Click the "Device Manager" button
check device List for "Display Adapter" - is it marked with
an asterisk or questionamark? No.

Open the sub-headers for Display Adapter,
Does it correctly identify "NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200"? Yes.

RIGHT click that entry and select "Properties"
A dialog for your graphics card will appear,
under the "General" tab what does "Device status" indicate?

"This device is working properly.
If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the
troubleshooter."

Troubleshooter sure didn't help.

Lower down ensure in Device usage that "Use this device"
is selected.

I'm stumped, could you get your hands on another monitor
to try, just to rule out your monitor. Also Nvidia normally
installs "nView Desktop manager" in control panel, if it's
there- try the Tools/Flat panel screen calibration.
Also in nView desktop manager under info tab, try the
"Display settings" just to check it agrees with windows?

From what I can see, I had exactly the same problem.

I was running Nvidia GeForce FX 5200, with the latest driver from Microsoft
(I didn't write down the version sorry). It worked badly: only displayed
4-bit colour, 640x480 mode.

So I rolled the driver version back: it's now on driver version 5.6.7.3 and
works well... except it doesn't work with Wolfenstein Enemy Territory with
patch 2.60.

Prior to my re-installation, I was running driver version 4.5.2.3 dated
28/7/03; this version works fine with Wolfenstein ET.

Through all of this, I was running the same monitor (Tatung CD - old and
crappy but hey it works, running at 1024x768, 32-bit colour).

My next step is to download the old 4.5.2.3 version of the Nvidia drivers,
unless anybody has a better suggestion.
