dear *,

i've encountered the following problem which has completely paralyzed
my windows xp desktop.

i've removed my mouse + keyboard from my computer and given it away.
after a few days returning to my computer, after the boot i've realized
that there's no mouse and keyboard, so i've plugged a new mouse and
keyboard in.

the problem now is, that a "new hardware found" wizard is coming,
asking me to click "next". which i, of course, can't do. neither with
the mouse nor with the keyboard.

i've tried usb/ps2 keyboards. both bring up the wizard.

it's an windows xp professional sp2 [eng]. there's auto-login switched
on, so i'll enter the desktop after reboot.

any ideas what might help?
thnx in advance,
kamil

Hi,

Try connecting the keyboard/mouse before you actually boot the computer -
i.e. turn off your computer, connect the KB/Mouse and then turn on the
computer.

That should ideally solve your problem.

hello Hardik,

thank you for your quick reply.
sorry that i didn't mentioned it in my original post, but that is the
case. the ps2 keyboard can only be connected before booting the
computer, so i've tried it both ways.
it will always come up, detect the device and pop-up with the wizard.

I am not too sure as to what is trying to install first, the mouse or the
keyboard
as you do not mention what the wizard is trying to install. Maybe try
booting with only the mouse attached to see if that gets installed first. If
it does, the reboot with keyboard attached to install it. (If the mouse works
but have to type something to get the keyboard running try the built in On
Screen Keyboard located under Accessibility in the start menu)

hi Ron,

previously, i had a keyboard with usb hub attached + an usb mouse
connected to the keyboard.
normally, if i would have the mouse connected to one of the usb ports
in the computer directly, windows should remember it and it wouldn't
ask for a driver if i plug-in the mouse into the same usb port.
unfortunately as the mouse was connected using the keyboards usb hub -
this isn't the case.

now i have a different usb keyboard + ps2 keyboard + same type of usb
mouse.
nor the mouse nor the keyboard work. so i've tried to:
- plug-in the mouse + keyboard [before/after booting]
- plug-in the mouse + ps2 keyboard [before booting]
- plug-in the mouse only [before/after booting]
- plug-in the keyboard only [before/after booting]
- plug-in the ps2 keyboard only [before booting]

Turn off the machine, plug both mouse and keyboard directly into the
computer-no hubs!-reboot. Windows always checks motherboard ports for a
mouse and keyboard first. You can 'add in' the hub (on another port) later.

I think the problem you are experiencing is due to the boot sequence both
the BIOS and Windows uses. Hubs are considered 'peripheral' devices. Both
the BIOS and Windows check the motherboard ports for mouse and keyboard
first, the BIOS reports no keyboard or mouse to Windows ; Windows checks
again, and gets confused because it doesn't know to check the hubs for a
mouse or keyboard.

I also think the system is so flaked out, you may need to clear the CMOS
and have the BIOS 'rediscover' all hardware in order to have it work
properly again. If you don't know how to do that, take it to someone who
does.

Just make sure you plug the keyboard and mouse directly into the motherboard
before you reboot.

Good Luck

hello Don,
that's what i was doing the whole time. the keyboard and the mouse
where connected directly to the usb ports on the motherboard. the hub
mentioned before was a hub integrated into the previous keyboard, where
i had my mouse plugged in [motherboard->usb port->keyboard->mouse].

actually bios knew that keyboard and mouse were present, as i could use
them perfectly until windows started. also windows discovered both. the
problem was probably my windows configuration, as it was always coming
with a wizard asking me, if i want to use a specific driver or a known
driver. on all the other systems i've checked, windows installs drivers
automatically if the device is known. the wizard pops up only if
windows doesn't find a driver for that device. this was not my case,
with my configuration, it will pop up every time.

anyway, problem solved [as mentioned in my previous mail], nevertheless
thank you for your help.

regards,
kamil
