Windows XP Constantly accessing hard drive

Windows XP Home ran fine for 1+ years with Maxtor HDD.
Last week, system started to constantly access hard drive
from initial startup until shutdown. Maxtor diagnostic
tool confirmed hard drive is OK, indicating a problem
with XP driver????

Virus scan, defragment the drive, check if any software is running in
"background".

Check that the Indexing Service is turned off!
Also turn off any MS Office FastFind programs.
