Windows XP - can't log on to Samba

D

dimitri

i've got a linux redhat server, 2 winXP and an apple. the apple can log
on to the samba, no problem.
the 2 windows computer could log on as well, everything was smooth, but
suddenly i get those "not accesible, you might not have permission...."

when i try to log on through the workgroup rather than the short cut,
it states that there is a dublicate name on the network and i should
rename the computer and try again. well i tried a few times, same
statement. i must admid, i might had the same name, log in etc.

but i've changed it, and the samba is running fine. sometimes i can log
in with my XP, than it is fine for a few days and suddenly, same thing
happens.

any logical explanations?

any help appreciated.

I've never had this problem, but from your description it looks like the
problem is that your workgroup thinks 2 computers have the same hostname.
What would cause this, I'm not sure? Possibly NetBIOS names aren't being
assigned properly resulting in duplicate names or possibly the problem is
related to a conflict as to which box is running a WINS server? If you
aren't running a WINS server then you need to look at other methods for
hostname resolution, such as static files such as /etc/hosts or DNS.

If you Windows boxes are using DHCP make sure that each one has an unique
hostname. I think for a LAN that needs to communicate between boxes like
this, setting up static ip addresses makes more sense than using DHCP
assigned addresses.

Take a look at your samba log file as this might shed more light on your
problem.

Cheers.

Hi Dimitri.

Are your machines in a workgroup?

Have you put in exactly the same credentials with appropriate
permissions on the redhat server machine?
