Windows XP cannot ping PC's on same sub-net but can browse internet (fix)

Not sure if I am posting this in the correct place. I have had an
ongoing problem with windows XP unable to ping computers onthe same
subnet. I rebuilt my laptop and yesterday, a month after the rebuild,
the same issue occured. I found the problem to be was with the
Netscreen remote client VPN software. If the SPD for connecting to my
own netowork was loaded in Netscreen remote and I was on the local
lan, I could not ping any ip address on the lan but I could browse the
internet. If you are having a similar problem I suggest that you look
to VPN or firewall software. Hope his helps.
