Windows XP bootup screen freezes... and More

I have a Dell computer running Windows XP. When I booted, my screen suddenly
froze at the Windows XP boot up screen. I rebooted several times but couldn't
get past this problem. I then went in the menu and chose "Last Good
Configuration" and rebooted. Now all I have is a blank screen. First,
what's the solution to the frozen WinXP frozen screen (in case this occurs
again as I've also seen others with the same problem) and what can I do to
get my computer up and running again. Prior to doing the "Last Good
Configuration" at least I was able to get into safe mode but now all I get a
"keyboard not found" error while trying to access that menu.

Can I pop in a Windows XP disk and boot from it into windows then do a
system restore? Or should I do a "repair" first and if so how?

One more question if I may. I'm sorry, I'm trying to cover all ground with
questions for this problem in one posting. Should I or can I reintall only
the necessary system files from the Windows XP disk instead of a full install
which would delete "my documents" and all other essential files I've saved?
Any help with this problem would be appreciated. Thank you.....

A repair install will keep data and programs intact. Note though that
things can go wrong, so you should always have a full and complete
backup of important data.
