Twice now my PC running Windows XP has booted to the blue
welcome screen and then stopped before I could select a
profile to log into. I cannot log in at all, can't even
boot in safe mode. When I call HP (who made the
computer), they say it's a bug in XP and the OS has to be
reinstalled. Oh, and there is no way to fix it, no
patches exist, and it may happen again.

Does anyone know what's going on here or how to fix it?
HP keeps pointing me to an article about a corrupt
registry, but it has no info on how to PREVENT this.

This may or may not be a problem with Windows. It may be a hardware
problem. Unfortunately, it's not possible to tell from your post. If HP
tech support won't walk you through a proper diagnosis, then you'll
need to take the machine to a good local computer repair shop (not a
Best Buy or CompUSA type of store).
