Windows XP Backup problem (ASR)

When I try to use the Automated System Recovery Prep Tool
and designate my CDRW drive as the "backup media or file
name" I get the following error message:

The backup file name could not be used.

X:\Backup.bkf

Please ensure it is a valid path, and that you have
sufficient access.

(Note: "X" = CDRW Drive)

I know that this is a dual media backup, but the floppy
portion is secondary to this step. Can anyone offer any
assistance!

Windows XP CD-RW writing is not as friendly as some external applications
(Nero, Roxio, etc) and is limited. For example, while you can drag-drop
files and then select to burn the CD or CD-RW.. Once this is done you cannot
ADD to the CD-RW without erasing the whole thing first.

If you want to read up on what you can and cannot do with CD/CD-RWs in XP
(natively) - I suggest here:
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm

"You can back up your data to a file on a storage device. A storage device
can be a hard disk, a Zip disk, or any type of removable or nonremovable
media to which you can save a file. This option is always available."

You cannot "save a file" to a CD-R/CD-RW using file->save. Not with default
Windows XP and no third party apps installed. You can copy a file to a
"holding area" and then tell XP to "Write those files to CD". But you
cannot "save a file" to a CD using just Windows XP.

I know - picky wording, but accurate. This is why you cannot backup to
CD/CD-RW using native Windows XP tools. Also, just because built in help
and support "infers" it, does not mean the current and updated help and
support (the web page) can't explain it away. grin
