Windows XP and External DVD Burner

I installed an external DVD Burner drive a few months ago. Ever since then, I
get the following message when I start the computer: "HI-SPEED USB Device
Plugged into non-HI-Speed USB Hub". The computer has several USB ports, all
of which are HI-SPEED 2.0, and the drive is connected to one. How do I
eliminate this incorrect message?

Also, I leave this drive constantly powered. However, sometimes when I try
to save to it, the computer does not recognize the drive is connected. If I
go to My Computer, this drive (F) is missing. I correct the problem by
turning off the power to the drive and then turning it back on; the computer
then recognizes the presence of this drive. How do I correct this problem?

I am running Windows XP Home Edition.

Are you positive you have USB 2.0 ports?

Are you sure the cable between the drive and the computer is a USB 2.0
capable cable?

Have you tried a different port?
(People seem to have more success with ports on the back of the computer -
although to be technical - that makes no logistical sense.)

As for the recognition problem... Is this a box someone put a drive in or
is this a true vendor assembled thing? In other words - what is the
make/model of the external drive? Is it a Western Digital, Seagate, etc ALL
THE WAY - or a box with drive in it?

I have the DVD Drive connected to one of the two USB 2.0 connectors on the
rear of the computer; I have not tried connecting it to a different USB port,
but like you said since all ports are USB 2.0 why should it make a difference
- I will try it though. The external drive is a Samsung Model SE-S184 18X
unit with Light-Scribe and double-layer capability, just purchased in
September 2006; it is their current model. As far as the cable, it's the one
that came with the drive and I assume is a 2.0 capable cable (how can you
tell ?)

With regard to the computer's recognition of it, as I said, it "disappears"
occasionally from My Computer and reappears when I power the drive off and
then back on.

These problems are not "show-stoppers" but are in the annoying category; I
would like to correct them though.
