I have an older toshiba laptop that has died on me and I
beleive that it will not be salvageable. Since It may
not be usable anymore I would like to put xp onto another
machine that is using windows 98. How will I go about
activating this other machine so that I can use xp on
it. This is only if my laptop is no longer usable. Can
I activate this other machine or am I stuck with a copy
of xp that I can no longer use

If you have an OEM copy of XP on your dying Toshiba (i.e., the machine came
"preloaded" with XP), then if the machine dies, so does the software. If you
loaded a retail copy onto the Toshiba yourself, then it can migrate to
another machine. Use the existing product key to activate on the new
machine.

If the XP came as installed on the laptop, then it is regarded as part
of that and licensed only to it - it may not be transferred. If it was
a retail XP CD that you installed yourself, junk the present machine and
install it on the new one - When it comes to activation, you may find it
will go through on the net anyway - if more than 120 days since you last
did it certainly will. If not, you will have to phone a toll-free
number that will be given, to explain and swap one long number for
another to check back as you type it in

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not transferable),
simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on, and install
it onto the new one. If it's been more than 120 days since you last
activated that specific Product Key, you'll most likely be able to
activate via the Internet without problem. If it's been less, you
might have to make a 5 minute phone call.
