I have an old HP A220N desktop system. For the last 24 hours it has been
acting up in a peculiar manner: every 59 60 minutes or so it would re-start
automatically.

What could be the cause? Hardware? Software?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Check Event Logs (Administrative Tools) for any clues.
And, or, run in Safe Mode for a period to see if its replicated

Right click on My Computer/Properties/Advanced/Start up and Recovery
Settings button/untick Automatically restart. The next time this
happens, it won't reboot but give you a BSOD with a code you can look up
on Google and find out what's really happening.

Thanks for the advice. This is the error message:

STOP: C000021a {Fatal System Error}

The Windows Logon Process System process terminated unexpectedly with a
status of

0xc00005 (0x00000000 0x00000000)

The system has been shut down.

Then perhaps you need to investigate what is loading using msconfig.
I assume Event Viewer gave no clues?
In msconfig, disable all start-ups & reboot, then test for a period. Be
aware this process will disable any third party Firewall & AV
If the problem hasn't gone away, enable all start-ups, go to services Tab,
hide all MS disable the rest, reboot & test

In Safe Mode, it worked fine.
There is malware out in the wild that exhibits this symptom. Make sure
your anti-virus is up to date (if you don't have such software, you
really do need it). Try HiJackThis (great software, terrible name). When
you search for it on the web, you will also find support forums that
will analyze the log files written by HiJackThis (that's all the program
does).
Good luck
